The 2024 GOP Primary grows ever larger as Miami Mayor Francis X. Suarez enters the fray.
He joins a crowded field that’s already swelled by two Floridian heavyweights by the name of Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump.
What makes Suarez interesting is that he is the twice-elected Mayor of Miami, which was pivotal in both the 2016 and 2020 elections for Trump.
His Cuban - American background only makes for a more interesting competition as both DeSantis and Trump vie for the affections of the staunchly conservative Cuban - American base in Miami.
Despite some similarities between Suarez and the members of this growing GOP Presidential field (including some pending Federal charges), Suarez separates himself as a seemingly proud establishment candidate as he hails from a family of politicians and lawyers.
His father, Xavier Suarez, even served as the mayor of Miami during the 1980s and 1990s.
Additionally, instead of joining the race on the stance of “anti-woke” like his counterparts, he even went so far as to say DeSantis’s ongoing quarrel with Disney is a “personal vendetta.”
Suarez has largely focused on economic development, affordable housing, and, surprisingly enough, as a Republican candidate, climate change but also not surprisingly, as the mayor of a city on the frontlines of that battle.
Suarez is widely regarded as a rising star within the Republican party, and his entering the race should make for interesting discourse in the coming months.
